Winter is a time for steamy mugs of cocoa, decadent desserts and carb-heavy comfort foods, but if the thought of being restricted to a wardrobe of lycra and flowing tops lead to strangers talking about ‘due dates’ and friends casually rubbing your stomach scares you, then it’s time to regroup. Thankfully, a number of brands have released a range of less-naughty options to help sate your sweet tooth and we’ve taken on the tough job of trialling these tasty morsels and giving you the low-down.
These rich tasty morsels have the earthy flavour and texture of carob, with a sweet, fudge-like centre. Although each serving is high in kilojoules (892kj per 60g), they are very low in carbs and sugars, but the protein certainly packs a punch!
A sweet, but healthier alternative to the naughty office biscuit tin when you hit the 3pm slump, this Slim Secrets bar has a strong berry flavour and is coated with a thin layer of white chocolate. With about the same amount of kilojoules as a handful of cashew nuts (560kj), this delicious treat has 8.2g carbs per serve.
This one is for all the dark chocolate lovers out there, with a bitey, but creamy taste, this chocolate block is made in Spain using top quality cocoa beans. The flavours of this San Churro block are rich and even the biggest dark chocolate connesoeuir will have difficulty differentiating the ‘no sugar added’ option from other quality dark chocolates.
An indulgent option for when you’re craving a quick sugar hit, the Slim Secrets Fit & Fab bar is a combination of salty-sweet with the rich peanut fudge centre and light coating of chocolate on the outside. This bar is super low carb, with a measly 0.4g per serve and is just 414 kilojoules.
Need a last minute dessert that is low sugar, but still rich in chocolate-y goodness? This is your answer. These sugar-free chocolate chips are great for cooking with. I recommend serving melted with some baked pears and natural Greek yoghurt.
