Q & A with Amanda Cassar, Wealth Planning Partners

What’s the story behind your business?

It’s been a long and slow, growth journey to get the company from a one man band in the 80’s to great Financial Planning Firm for the present and future that can best look after our clients’ needs across the country.

What was your first job?

I was a junior at Katies from the age of 15 to 17. Vacuuming floors, sorting stock, spruiking sales, cleaning up racks and selling clothes. Retail wasn’t for me.

When you decided to start your own business, what was your big “why”?

It was more a “Why Not?”. I’d worked as a Personal Assistant to the principal, taken time out to get married and have my babies and when it was time to head back to work, I just knew the role inside out, and that I could and would be the successor for this business. That’s finally happened!

What have you had to give up?

Some time with my family has had to be sacrificed. Anyone who’s gone into their own business with the ideal of working your own hours and being flexible soon finds the business needs can take over. It’s always a juggle to get the balance and it’ll never be perfect.

Your proudest achievement to date?

The recent buy out of the senior partner in my business. On December 24, 2014 I bought out the share of the Planner I’d started working as a secretary for in 1991. What a journey!

What are some of the most exciting projects you’ve worked on?

I was really excited to be a finalist in the 2007 Qld Telstra Young Business Woman of the Year Awards. It was great to take out the Financial Standard ‘Conversationalist Award’ in 2013 and be included in their #FSPOWER50 and Digital Dozen for both 2013 and 2014 for the top people in finance in Social Media.

What would you tell your younger self not to do?

Don’t be so self critical. Stop the negative talk and be kind to yourself. Stop putting yourself last, but constantly take time to fill up the tank.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Believe in yourself!

What’s next for you and your business?

With the succession plan now complete, we’ve moved into a new office as a team in Robina on the Gold Coast. We can’t wait for a great 2015. Personally, I’m partnering with The Hunger Project this year and have committed to raising $25,000 in funds + costs before heading to Ethiopia in May of this year.
