Thankyou Water: Insights from a successful social enterprise

Melbourne Ambassador Kerry-Ann Bartle had the pleasure of meeting the Thankyou Water team and hearing about their remarkable social enterprise.

On Tuesday 12 February I attended a fabulous event held by Hard Edge Media in partnership with ICMI at Blank Canvas in South Melbourne. The special guest was the inspiring social entrepreneur Daniel Flynn from Thankyou Water who shared his marketing insights gained from building his successful organisation, Thankyou Water.

Thankyou Water is a business with a big social mission: to provide safe drinking water where it’s needed. They do this by creating a new bottled water brand, Thankyou Water. Through sales of Thankyou Water across Australia, they fund water projects in developing nations throughout Southeast, Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Daniel, despite feeling tragically under the weather, danced around the stage with the utmost enthusiasm as he told of his marketing challenges in building his business. With a big social mission and no money, Daniel and his team battled the world’s largest FMCG companies and successfully launched Thankyou Water using social media and PR.

They gained considerable public support through extensive media coverage with Channel 7’s Sunrise, 7PM Project and various print, radio and online media outlets.

Thankyou Water has over 40,000 people on its online social network community. It has also carried out a series of successful marketing campaigns including partner marketing with Telstra’s 1234 projects and Levis Australia.

Today, in Australia, Thankyou Water has over 2000 stockists and counts 7-Eleven Australia and Australia Post as partners.

Meanwhile, in Cambodia and Uganda, communities have already benefited from wells and water filters that have been installed with Thankyou Water funding. Dan and his team have visited the projects multiple times and were happy to report that to date over 18,800 people now have access to safe water for the rest of their lives.

Dan has a strong belief that impossibility is only someone else’s opinion and is not a fact. He is passionate about inspiring others to dream big and do what many believe is impossible.
