A Chat With Tara Bliss About Intuition And Living A Passionate Life

An intimate chat with self-help guru Tara Bliss about finding the best “job” in the world and the intuition that led her there.

As a former hair-dresser, bungee-jumping teacher and martini shaking bartender, Tara Bliss has always loved one thing: pushing herself and other people to go beyond what they think is appropriate. These days, as a coach, author and yoga teacher (with swagger), she’s still deeply passionate (read: obsessed) with guiding women to stretch beyond what is reasonable, or what feels possible. Named a ‘self-help guru’ by ELLE magazine, her teachings have been featured in Cleo, The Sunday Mail, The Daily Love and Mind Body Green.

We had a chat about living a passionate life and following intuitions.

What is your passion? How did you decide it was the right area for you to devote your time and energy?

I’m passionate about generosity, presence and wholesome health- and I’ve designed my life and business in such a way that everything revolves around those priorities.

I feel so blessed that I get to work with women (both one on one and via my online programs), teaching them how to embody these concepts as well, which of course is another passion of mine. I truly believe that as a spirit-fuelled coach and healer, I’ve got the best job in the world.

For every significant road I’ve travelled in life, there has been no ‘decisions’ involved. Life has this incredible capacity to offer us hints and signposts along the way, which takes the need to second-guess everything out of the equation. Yes, sometimes there’s risks involved, sometimes comfort zones need to be stretched, but when we’re on-purpose, our passions are revealed to us, which makes committing to them and charging forward a no-brainer.

I think you know you’re onto something when time expands; when you can throw hours, days, weeks, months into something – whether it’s a blog, a project, a program, a fledgling business- without complaining about it. That’s when passion takes over- things feel effortless and easy, and most importantly, you feel inspired.

That’s how I’ve felt for the last six months as I’ve devoted myself to my coaching business and my online program, The Party Girls Guide to Peace!

Do you listen to your intuition?

Daily! These days, when I feel disconnected from my intuition, I almost dive into damage control, and set about ways in which I can re-calibrate, relax and get back in the zone. Sometimes all it takes is a few conscious breaths or a quick stroll outside, other times I’ll light some candles and set some fresh intentions.

One thing’s for sure, the more I meditate, the more intuitive I am. Without a doubt.

When I was in Mexico last year, my intuition kept stubbornly whispering that I should sign up for an online entrepreneurial program. I was broke. I didn’t have a business. There was barely anyone reading my blog. But I trusted the insight, plunged in head first, and a few weeks later, my business was born and I started working with my first clients.

I’m now a full-time entrepreneur, and I have my intuition (and my dedication to a spiritual practice) to thank for that.

Has Twitter or other social media platforms helped you make your voice heard?

I’ve found Facebook to be an incredible sharing platform; it’s worked for my style of sharing, and my voice. Also, I’m positive that Instagram has given my clients and readers a warmer, more relaxed peak into the behind-the-scenes of me.

If I had to choose one social media platform to use on a deserted island, it would be Instagram. More interactive, more personal, more inspiring.

Who is the woman who has supported you the most in your life?

My mum has supported me in ways that she’ll probably never understand. We had a fairly dysfunctional relationship growing up, and in many ways, she was my most influential teacher. I’ve learnt a lot about the type of woman I want to be, the type of mother I want to be, how I want to be showing up the world.

She did the absolute best she knew how, and I love her with all of my heart.

3 of your favourite things

TRAVEL: I long to live a life rich with adventure, laughter and timeless moments.

MY HUSBAND, GLEN: Oh man. He’s incredible; so giving, so patient, so mysterious and wise. I am perpetually mesmerised by him, and his food (he’s an outstanding chef!).

PEN & PAPER: I recently attended a 10 day silent meditation retreat, and wasn’t allowed to write. I nearly went insane. Writing is in my blood, and NOTHING beats the feel of pen on paper… I could lose myself for hours…
